ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH
The initial days of owning a new camera are filled with a distinct kind of restlessness. For me, that urge was all about finally getting my hands on the Nikon Z6II paired with the 85mm Z lens. The setup practically begged to be taken out into the world, and I was anxious to test out a few creative prop ideas that had been floating around in my mind.
I found the perfect muse in Geetawaly, a pretty little sister who was quite shy back then but carried an undeniable enthusiasm for a proper photoshoot. We decided to head down to the banks of the Golandi River just as the day was beginning to wind down. The river bank was lined with tall grass, creating a beautiful, natural frame for the evening.
As the sun began its golden descent, I knew exactly what shot I wanted. I lowered myself right down to the water level, positioning the camera just above the surface. I had brought along my ukulele to use as a prop, which gave Geetawaly something to hold on to, instantly easing the slight tension of her shyness.
The magic happened all at once. Through the lens, the 85mm compressed the background into a gorgeous, buttery bokeh of golden light. The setting sun reflected brilliantly off the gentle ripples of the water, catching the glittering smile of the little one. In that single frame, the warmth of the evening, the music of the ukulele, and the sheer joy of the moment came together perfectly. It was one of those rare instances where the vision in your head matches the shot on your screen, completely satisfying the creative urge that had been pulling at me all week.
